چکیده

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are drawing increasing interest due to their relatively high carrier mobilities, valley pseudospins, and gapped electronic structures, which all indicate interesting nonlinear optical properties of these 2D materials. However, such nonlinear optical properties are so far less investigated and their correlation with the electronic structure of the material is rarely probed. In this work, we have systematically investigated the spatial self-phase modulation (SSPM) of MoSe2 flakes in a suspension form, which is a coherent third-order nonlinear optical effect. The nonlinear susceptibility χ((3)) and its wavelength-dependence are measured, yielding a value of 1.1 × 10(-9) e.s.u. (SI: 1.53 × 10(-17) m(2)/V(2)) at 532 nm laser excitation for effective one-layer MoSe2.

Effect of Nonlinear Phase Variation in Optical Millimetre Wave Radio over Fibre Systems

In this paper, we propose an optical millimetre wave radio-over-fibre (mm-wave RoF) system that uses a dual drive Mach Zehnder modulator (DD-MZM), which is biased at the maximum transmission biasing point, to generate an optical double sideband-suppressed carrier. The input to the DD-MZM are binary phase shift keying (BPSK), quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 8-phase shift keying (8-PSK) and...

The structural origin of second harmonic generation in fascia

Fascia tissue is rich in collagen type I proteins and can be imaged by second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy. While identifying the overall alignment of the collagen fibrils is evident from those images, the tridimensional structural origin for the observation of SHG signal is more complex than it apparently seems. Those images reveal that the noncentrosymmetric (piezoelectric) structures...

Spatiotemporal coupling in dispersive nonlinear planar waveguides

The multidimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation governs the spatial and temporal evolution of an optical field inside a nonlinear dispersive medium. Although spatial (diffractive) and temporal (dispersive) effects can be studied independently in a linear medium, they become mutually coupled in a nonlinear medium. We present the results of numerical simulations showing this spatiotemporal co...

Optical pulse compression based on nonlinear silicon waveguides and chirped Bragg gratings

Due to the growing demand for higher bandwidth, employing optical devices instead of electronic devices in data transmission systems has attracted much attention in recent years. Optical switches, modulators and wavelength converters are a few examples of the required optical devices. CMOS compatible fabrication of these devices, leads to much more growing of this technology. Optical pulse comp...

Ultrafast nonlinear effects in one-dimensional photonic crystals

This thesis deals with the temporal dynamics of light interacting with a special class of nano-structures: so-called photonic crystals (PCs). The focus of these investigations is nonlinear phenomena on a sub-picosecond time scale. PCs are solid-state nano-structures with a spatially periodic dielectric function. They influence propagating light in an analogous manner to that of electronic motio...
